Clinical Reflexology The ancient art of reflexology is today one of the most popular, non-invasive complementary healthcare treatments utilised, and it is regarded by many healthcare professionals as one of the most well establised, well respected and effective holistic healthcare treatments available. Reflexology was used as a theraputic tool by civilisations such as those found in ancient Egypt, China and India. Linked closely to the meridian system used in Chinese medicine (six of the twelve major meridians in the body run into the feet), reflexology is a wonderfully effective tool which can be used to help rebalance the delicate systems of the mind and body. Reflexology helps promote better circulation, restores the free flow of blood and Qi throughout the body thus promoting better organ function. It helps to relieve stress, promoting endophin production and helps to maintain general good health and wellbeing. In the West reflexology theory based on the principle that reflexes, or areas in the feet, relate to each of the internal organs and structures in the body, through a system of energy pathways. With the left foot representing the left side of the body and the right foot the right side, the areas in the foot form a map which closely resembles the anatomical layout of the body. Having the entire body represented in the feet, reflexology offers us a means of treating the body as a whole - a truly holistic approach. The term 'clinical reflexologist' refers more specifically to the practitioner's knowledge of clinical conditions.
