Auricular Acupuncture

Auricular (or ear) Acupuncture is a specialist complementary therapy where acupuncture points on the outer ear are treated with either small, sterile, disposable needles or electro-stimulation, in order to treat many different chronic complaints.

In Auricular Acupuncture the ear as regarded as a micro-system of the body.  The auricle is covered with nearly 150 different acupoints  ~ each one corresponding to a particular area of the anatomy or linked to the systems of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Explanations as to how Auricular Acupuncture works differ.  The more recent Western view is that the outer ear acts as a direct switchboard to the brain, sending electrical signals, via the nervous system, to the area of the body affected.  So for example, if we were to place a needle in the neck acupoint, any pain in the neck area will be alleviated. A needle placed in the Shen Men point would help to balance the emotions and promote endorphin production .......

According to Chinese Medicine, Qi (vital energy) runs through pathways in the body called meridians and these meridians converge at the ear.  When the Qi in the body becomes unbalanced or blocked, illness and pain occur.  By stimulating the appropriate acupoints using acupuncture, we can restore a healthy balance and flow of Qi and our health  improves.

What's involved ?

An Auricular Acupuncture treatment involves placing 5 or 6 small,  sterile needles in each ear.  The points chosen correspond to the area of the body or condition we wish to treat.  Small press needles or acupressure magnets may be placed on selected points, between sessions, in order to enhance and prolong the effects of the treatment.

Is ear acupuncture painful ?

Auricular Acupuncture should not be painful.  You will be asked to use a controlled deep breathing technique whilst the needles are inserted.  You may initially feel a small scratching sensation, but this is just for a second and you will not feel the needles once they are in place.  The needles will be left in place for 40 minutes or for the duration of a Reflexology treatment, if you are having a combination treatment.
